INGESTUREADING – A Workshop with Valentina Desideri and Christian Hawkey
In 1933 the ground-breaking feminist and working physician Charlotte Woff was arrested and briefly detained by the Nazis for dressing as a man; she quickly fled to Paris, and then to London, and she went on to publish some of the first books on lesbianism and bi-sexuality, as well as two astonishing studies of chirology (palm reading) and gesture.
This writing workshop is inspired by and loosely organized around this radical healer. We are interested in developing modes of reading–the paw, the hand, the work of art as prosthetic–and modes of gesturing (the hand, body, and mind in movement) that expand and inform a writing practice and a healing practice, with healing defined as a process in which we map and connect processes of different scales, especially insisting on violent ones, such as racism, police brutality, white supremacy, sexism, and the financialization of bodies. We are also interested in fostering gestures of play that could help us decolonize intrenalized power structures and/or tune into ways of being and thriving that were never, from the start, visible to such structures.
